Susan Stewart’s areas of specialization include demography, family, gender, health, and quantitative methods. Her research utilizes large datasets and focuses specifically on living arrangements, union formation, fertility, parent-child relationships, and child well-being. Dr. Stewart is currently working on a NICHD-funded project that examines African American noncustodial fathers and their children. With research support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management, she is also investigating parental involvement and child well-being among children with nonresident parents, comparing children who have absent mothers, absent fathers, and two absent parents. Dr. Stewart is currently co-authoring a book entitled, The New American Stepfamily (Sage Publications) that tracks the evolution and institutionalization of this diverse family form.
