Dan Russell is currently conducting research in several different areas related to loneliness and social support. One set of laboratory-based experimental studies deals with the role of attribution processes in the provision and perception of social support. These studies have indicated causal explanations for why an individual who is providing you with support influences your satisfaction with that supportive behavior. This is true in both interactions with a stranger and with a close friend or a dating partner. Experimental manipulations of causal explanations for supportive behavior have led to differences between groups in satisfaction with social support. Current studies are examining how causal attributions for the source of the problem are related to attributions for supportive behavior. Future studies will focus on using this information to develop methods for enhancing the perceptions of support among stressed populations.

Another series of studies is continuing to examine the causes and consequences of loneliness. As part of this research Dr. Russell has continued with the development of the UCLA Loneliness Scale, a widely used measure of loneliness. To date, the article reporting on the development of this measure has received over 500 citations in the scientific literature since its publication in 1980. A recent study has examined the impact of loneliness on nursing home admission among the elderly, finding that older Iowans who are extremely lonely are much more likely to be admitted to a nursing home, after controlling for a number of other risk factors. Currently, analyses are examining the ability of loneliness and other measures of social contact to predict mortality over a 13 year period in a sample of 3,000 elderly Iowans. Other studies are examining factors that determine feelings of loneliness among high school and college students and the relationship between loneliness and the development of friendships over the Internet.

Dr. Russell also continues an active program of work focused on methodological issues. Along with Hal Stern from statistics, he has been conducting simulation studies evaluating the use of multiple imputation procedures as an approach to missing data. He has also been actively investigating issues related to multilevel regression analysis and testing structural equation models with multilevel data. These statistical procedures are currently being used in a large investigation of African-American families from Iowa and Georgia, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.
